The advantages of machine translation are obvious: Larger volumes of text are translated more quickly, which means the costs are considerably lower than for a translation completed by a human.

So that you can act in a more profitable manner and more quickly, Übersetzungen [HOISS] as your service provider strives to address your requirements and to automate processes of any kind and thus also translations for you. These also include machine translations.

Within the framework of machine translations, Übersetzungen [HOISS] offers the following services:

We prepare the source text so that it is as “easy to understand” as possible for the machine.

With free-of-charge platforms for machine translations that are freely accessible for all, there is the risk that confidential data are stored in the respective platform and could be made accessible to the general public. This cannot happen to us because we carry out the machine translation taking into account the data protection guidelines.

This is then followed by the check of the machine translation for its suitability for further post-editing.

We offer the proofreading of machine translations, the so-called post-editing which is carried out by our qualified post-editors with a university degree and qualification according to ISO 17100, in the form of two options:

Light post-editing for texts in which the correct content is important but little consideration is paid to style and sentence structure. These include, for instance, accompanying product documentation or the documentation of a call for tender. Our task with a post-editing is to change the machine-translated text as far as necessary but as little as possible.

Full post-editing if the post-editor is to take over as much as possible from the results of the machine translation but should still make sure that the translated sentences are easy to understand and precise and do not contain any grammatical errors. Depending on the specification from the customers, the stage of full post-editing can extend as far as it not being possible to differentiate the end result from a human translation. This group, for which machine translations require full post-editing, includes, among others, documents with a high risk with regard to the health and safety of the target group.

In order to be able to access the work of the post-editing again for future translations, the translated and proofread text is saved on request in a so-called “translation memory”.

Would you like to know whether your texts are suitable for machine translation?

The quality of the machine translation still depends on the type of texts that have to be translated. If you, for instance, try to machine translate specialist texts or lengthy, complex sentences, the quality of the translation quickly declines. With translations that require a “reading between the lines” because they refer to cultural and emotional aspects, the program is totally out of its depth anyway.

The quality of machine translations also depends considerably on the respective language combination. For instance, you will receive a better result with a translation from Spanish into English than with translations from Chinese into German.

That is why a large percentage of translations are still done by human translators and it is anticipated that this will continue to be the case for some years yet. These include certified translations, advertising texts, legal, economic texts and other specialist content for which a wrong machine translation would constitute a considerable risk, as well as many others. With content of this type, customers are frequently not willing and also not able at reasonable conditions to leave these to a machine.
